XY LONDON

In the beginning, shoemaking was a manual, time-consuming craft. Shoemakers at that time used over 15 different methods formaking shoes. Some of these techniques include pegged construction, geyser welted, English welted, blake-stitched, Norwegian stitch down, moccasin, German-sewn, Bolognese stitched, etc. it was also in those early times that the shoe emerged in the Mediterranean region as one the simplest mode of foot protection. It was then made of leather thongs or cords from various materials. Identical footwear was also used in the Far East in that period albeit it was designed with plaited grass or fronds. Also, certain climatic conditions made it necessary to use footwear that completely covered the feet. This was made possible by lacing a single piece of untanned hide with a thong. By the 18th century, shoemaking had become a cottage industry experiencing growth and further commercialization. Small producers began to store their products in big warehouses in their neighbourhoods. Shoemaking, however, remained a manual profession during this period. But by the end of the 19th century, the industry had become largely mechanized and characterized by mass production in huge footwear factories. The mechanization of shoemaking has its origins in the Napoleonic wars when a French-born English engineer developed equipment for the mass-production of boots for British soldiers. The invention of the sewing machine in 1846 also offered shoemakers an alternative method mechanizing the shoemaking process. The AGO system, a technique used to produce stitchless shoes, was introduced in 1910. The old manual crafting of shoes is still in practice, particularly in less affluent parts of the world. Modern equipment used in today’s shoemaking includes die-cutting tools for cutting footwear materials as well as grommet machines used to open holes for lacing. More recently in the earlier part of this century, there has been a resurgence in shoemaking in places such as the US, the UK, and Australia. Part of the reasons for this new trend is an increased preference for leather refinement rather than replacement. This preference is not only evident in shoemaking but across other fashion products and accessories. Also, the evolution of e-commerce and modern logistics networks are providing shoemaking and fashion companies wider and more convenient opportunities for reaching consumers. One such company is XY LONDON. For independent customer reviews about XY LONDON by existing clients, read on.
