The British Newspaper Archive allows users to search through over 55 million pages of digitised historical newspapers from Great Britain and Ireland, and their records date back to the 1700s. The index is searchable by keyword, name, location, date or title and is performed via the website. Access to the newspapers via the British Library is free. However, the British Newspaper Archive requires a subscription after viewing the first three pages of a newspaper. A 1-month subscription is £12.95, while a 12-month subscription is £79.95.

In addition, the subscription is pay-as-you-go instead of a contract, allowing you to opt-out whenever you want. I recently used the British Newspaper Archive to conduct research on British history for a project I was working on. I must say, it was an amazing experience. The archive is packed with historical newspapers that were easy to access and search. What stood out to me was the user-friendly interface of the website which made navigation smooth and hassle-free. Also, their powerful search engine allowed me to do quick searches based on keywords or phrases relevant to my research topic, thus saving me lots of time. The newspaper articles provided in this archives are also very informative and well-preserved- some dating as far back as the 18th century!
