Ah...New Year's Day. Isn’t it funny how the first day of each year is usually a wasted day spent in front of your TV, in your pajamas eating greasy food and wishing you had never heard of tequila? Perhaps this is nature’s way of providing a great motivation for many people to start their New Year's resolutions with added vim and vigor. Suppose you are feeling ambitious and you want to start your new fitness regime or maybe a nagging household renovation project and you are wondering just what is open today?
Let’s find out more about New Year’s Day hours in this article and below.
Let’s order in!
Let's first talk about food. Nothing cures a hangover like a giant feed delivered to you. I swear by deep-fried anything and lots of pineapple juice. Trust me, it works! No one wants to cook on New Year’s Day! Ordering food is a great option on New Year’s Day, and thankfully most restaurants are open for delivery. Be sure to start your year off with good karma with a big tip for that delivery driver who has to work on New Year’s Day. What goes around, comes around!
What’s Open?
Thankfully for most people in the US New Year's Day is a Federal Holiday, so most businesses are closed for the day... which is probably for the best as it would not be a very productive day for most people at work. Thankfully this year it’s a perfect long weekend setup as January 1st falls on Friday. No work until Monday, January 4th! Lots of time to recover from that wild New Year’s Eve party.
However most stores are open: let's take a look into some of the bigger box stores and their hours for Friday, January 1st (please check your local store to be certain):
The Home Depot: Open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in most locations.
Target: Regular hours however many stores will close at 9 p.m.
Barnes & Noble: Regular hours with most stores closing at 6pm.
Ikea: Most shops are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What’s closed?
Government-run locations, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles and public libraries, are most likely going to be closed this Friday. No surprise there.
The US Postal Service will not deliver mail Friday, and US post offices are closed as well. FedEx and UPS will also be closed. Who ships on New Year’s Day?
Banks are generally all closed, although ATMs are always available.
If you plan to visit a museum, call to make sure they aren't closed. Not every museum will be open on New Year's Day.
Many large grocery department stores will be closed including Trader Joe's, Sam's Club and Costco.
“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.”
