In 1909, Nils Adamson sold condoms in his tobacconist shop in Sweden. He married Karin, and the Adamsson chain was started in 1939. The brand sold medical products and a range of children's items. In addition, they had a special permit to sell condoms. Under the Swedish Contraception Act, it was considered illegal to explain what condoms were used for. Nills circulated information about contraception in a catalogue and was sent to prison because of this. Karin was responsible for being the publisher of the catalogue, so she also went to jail. Kerstin Övferström was in charge of the business in 1975. Condoms started being sold in pharmacies across Sweden, so the brand's focus shifted to childrenswear. Later in 1976, Gunilla Axén took over the business and items for older children were introduced, so Polarn, meaning Buddy, was added to Pyret, meaning The Little One, in the mid-70s. Mats and Jo Nilsson brought the brand to the UK in 2006 with a vision to provide families with sustainable and high-quality children's clothing.
